Who?

Michel Delhommeau hails from the western part of the Loire Valley in the commune of Monnières, just south of Nantes. Interestingly, the soils in this particular commune are predominantly gabbro and gneiss, unlike much of the Muscadet region which is dominated by granite. In order to express the nuances between each soil type, Michel vinifies them separately using wild yeast and limited amounts of sulphur which gives his wines better fruit definition than most Muscadet while keeping sea breeze aromatics from the nearby Atlantic.

Why?

Michel’s wines have a wonderful energy and tension to them along with a real sense of place. The gneiss and gabbro soils that his vineyards lie on along with extended lees ageing really set his wines apart from other expressions from the region. The Symbiose fruit comes from the gneiss vineyards and this translates to a wine brimming with minerality.

With?

The classic regional pairing with Muscadet is, as one might expect (and due to its proximity to the Atlantic coast) seafood though specifically oysters. They go together like cheese and tomato, eggs and bacon or even, well, Muscadet and Oysters… The two are synonymous especially if you were to visit Brittany or the surrounds of the western tip of the Loire Valley. Delhoummeau’s slightly richer expressions will happily pair with fatty white meats such as Pork Belly and also hard, salty cheeses.
