Tasting Note On the nose, it has aromas of citrus fruit, grapefruit, lemon and lime. The palate is vibrant with a good balance of zesty acidity and minerality, as well as a touch of saltiness on the finish.

Baron de Badassière is from the Picpoul de Pinet region of the Languedoc, near the coast of the south of France. The name of the wine refers to the Badassière vineyard which lies near the small town of Pomérols. In the 18th century, the vineyard belonged to Baron Charles Emmanuel, a colourful character who was rumoured to be the illegitimate son of King Louis XV.

Picpoul is just of those go to wines that you should always have a cheeky bottle of in the fridge just in case you’re at a loose end and need something refreshing and delicious to help pass the time. The winemaker Matt Thomson is a kiwi and produces wine both in his native, New Zealand along with projects in Italy and of course France. We find his wines always express wonderful varietal character along with being, pure, clean and vibrant which of course is right up our alley.

Picpoul is normally super fresh and the above wine is no exception. The appellation’s proximity to the Mediterranean sea immediately evokes thoughts of pairings with the local bounty though the high levels of acidity lend itself to a variety of pairings. Anything from Fried Calamari, to lighter Thai dishes accented with lemongrass and ginger, Peruvian style Ceviche or even the classic British Prawn cocktail with the aforementioned acidity cutting through the fattiness of the avocado and richness of the Marie Rose sauce like a knife through butter.
