Tasting Note An expansive nose with hints of jasmine, golden delicious apples and a strong, slightly smoky volcanic nuance and mineral digression. A substantial palate with cracking acidity and a vein of citrus that echoes throughout the fine, long volcanic and slightly almond finish.
Who?
Sabino “Sammy Bruno” Loffredo has quickly gained a reputation within and beyond Italy for some of the best Greco and Fiano wines. In fact, many would argue that both his Fiano and Greco are the single best examples of those varieties on the planet. Loffredo has definitely lived up to his award of “Up and coming winery of the year 2006” in Gambero Rosso and year in year out produces stunning wines across the board.
Why?
Founded in 1993, the 3 hectares of vineyards were chosen with the express purpose of showcasing the Montefredane ‘terroir’ to the wine world. Located in the province of Avellino, Campania on elevated, mountainous, volcanic terrain, Sammy produces unique wines that are completely faithful to the land from which they come. They simultaneously show elegance, depth, and a gorgeous, volcanic, mineral nuance which speaks volumes about the surrounding landscape. The wines are ready for release after bottling but have excellent age-ability, becoming more beautiful as they gain complexity in the bottle.
With?
We love the versatility of this wine though our mind immediately drifts towards a plethora of classic regional dishes starting perhaps with a light and crunchy Frito Misto di Mare (a lightly fried assortment of seafood). One could then move to a ‘secondi’ (rice or pasta) such as Risotto alla Pescatora, Spaghetti con le Vongole or one of our personal favourites, Orecchiette con Cime di Rapa, Anchovies, Chilli anda liberal shaving of Bottarga. For heartier, autumnal dishes you could head inland and find Broccoli and Salsiccia or if you wanted to get downright ‘crazy’ a fitting dish would be the aptly named ‘Pesce all’Acqua Pazza’ or Fish in crazy water, essentially a simple fish stew with tomatoes, garlic and parsley.
