Juice 2018 Garnacha, Basso, S.C Pannell, McLaren Vale, AUS
Grape Garnacha Tinta 100%
Farming Practising Organic, Vegan
Tasting Note This Grenache has fresh aromas of ripe red cherries and raspberries, with notes of rhubarb, rose petals and musk leading on to a plush and juicy palate. This wine is youthful, medium bodied and lively, with a long, succulent finish bolstered by fine, grainy tannins.
Stephen Pannell is one of the best and brightest of the new generation of Australian winemakers, having spent a decade working as chief red wine maker at Hardys before striking out on his own in 2004. Steve has worked all over the world, including with Aldo Vajra in Barolo and for Domaine Dujac and Pousse d'Or in Burgundy. His broad experience has helped shape his approach to winemaking and his wines are true expressions of the grapes and vineyards of McLaren Vale. In October 2015, Steve was named Winemaker of the Year by the consumer wine magazine, Gourmet Traveller Wine.
Steve’s idea for an early-release, low-sulphur, unfiltered Grenache had been bubbling away for thirteen years. Finally, in 2017, access to fruit from the right vineyard in Blewitt Springs: dry-grown and pruned to single-bud spurs, sparked the Basso project in to life. From the Latin Bassus, meaning low, Basso is low in additions and speaks clearly of the place from which it comes. It’s juicy, it’s fresh and it is quite simply just bloody delicious BBQ juice.
BBQ juice as we’ve so aptly named the Basso is, for obvious reasons, just bloody great with pretty much anything barbecued. If the weather is super-hot we would suggest serving it slightly chilled. It is a wonderful partner in crime with cured meats and is a regular by the glass offering in our wine store served side by side with our charcuterie and cheese selection for two. If we are honest this is the sort of juice which you can just quite easily smash sans food.
