Tasting Note Aromas of ripe blackberry, red cherry and a touch of spice on the nose. The palate is ripe and juicy but still fine and elegant. The structure is tight and the finish is lifted with hints of dried flowers and refreshing acidity.

Who?

Federico Giuntini Masseti now runs the property which has been in his family since 1827 and is situated just north of the town of Pontassieve. Interestingly the Rufina sub region is the northernmost zone in the Chianti Classico DOCG. The Selvapiana Estate covers 245 hectares, 60 of which are planted under vine (95% being Sangiovese), 22 are olive groves, and the rest is covered by woods. The estate takes a very holistic approach to its farming and production methods.

Why?

The Rufina zone is the smallest of all in Chianti (about 1,000 hectares of vineyard) but also one of the most special. The cool breeze that blows down the Sieve Valley gives the best wines a finesse and definition that few in Chianti Classico can match and there is no better producer in Rufina than Selvapiana. The elegance and freshness on display is why we love this wine. It is a true ‘all-rounder’ in every sense, great with a variety of dishes and just so bloody drinkable by itself.

With?

We could wax lyrical about regional pairings here of which there are many though we think this is just your classic all-rounder pairing wise. Pizza, especially with the addition of various meats and mushrooms, Pastas with a variety of sauces, anything from tomato based through to a richer Ragu and everything in between. Honestly it would happily sit side by side with a cheeky charcuterie and cheese selection in front of a roaring open fire. We’d probably suggest taking a couple of bottles as one is never enough!
