Tasting Note On the nose, there are aromas of fresh apples, yellow plums and pear. On the palate, it has a refreshing acidity with a lively, lifted finish and a touch of residual sugar putting it in the off dry category.

Who?

Located on steep, south-facing slopes two kilometres from where the Ruwer river meets the Mosel, the estate of Maximin Grünhaus has a history of viticulture dating from the Roman times. It takes its name from the Abbey of Saint Maximin, a Benedictine monastery which owned the land from the 7th to 18th century. Passing into French administration under Napoleon and then eventually to the von Schubert family in the late 19th century, the estate is now overseen by sixth-generation family member Maximin Von Schubert, who took over from his father Carl Von Schubert in 2014.

Why?

We are huge Riesling fans and this particular expression has a charming lightness which makes it hard to resist. We just absolutely love the drinkability of the wine. The slight off dry character keeps the acidity completely in check and ensure wonderful balance on the palate.

With?

The elegance of the wine means that pairing wise we would recommend lighter, fresher flavours and with the hint of residual sugar displayed in the wine, spicier elements as well. Even slightly astringent cheeses such as gorgonzola would work as the inherent saltiness is offset by the aforementioned residual sugar. Salt and Pepper squid garnished with fresh chilli and spring onion would work a treat or even the ubiquitous Thai dish, Som Tam (Spicy Green Papaya Salad) as it would create somewhat of a flavour explosion in ones’ mouth with the sugar again coming into to play, helping to tone down the spice levels and marry the two perfectly.
