Juice 2017 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits, La Croix, Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, Burgundy, FRA
Grape 100% Pinot Noir
Tasting Note 'La Croix' has notable purity which is expressed in its freshness and intense flavours of wild raspberry, gooseberries and blackcurrants. Its acidity is well balanced with supple, velvety tannins, and a long finish.
Alexandre and his wife Justine are ninth-generation custodians of Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret, with Alexandre having taken over the winemaking in recent years. The Domaine is located in Vosne Romanée in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. Alexandre personally picks his own oak from Nièvre and the Tronçais forest in Allier. The oak is cured at the Domaine for 18-24 months and a local cooper assembles the barrels for them.
We love the refinement and purity of this particular expression of Pinot Noir. This is due to the harsher climate of the Hautes-Côtes as opposed to the Côtes-de-Nuits; The vineyard is on a plateau ‘on top’ of the other vineyards, indeed these are the highest vineyards in Burgundy and the air circulates more freely through the valleys and over the hills. The 'La Croix' site is planted to have good sun exposure to compensate for the effects of the higher altitude.
We are going back to our greatest hits catalogue of classic Burgundian pairings to match with the purity of this gorgeous wine. Coq au Vin is a no brainer and a regional gem, along with ubiquitous Beef Bourguignon with freshness and purity cutting through the rich flavours with laser-like precision. For the vegetarian leaning, twist the classic aforementioned Bourguignon and replace the Beef with a meaty mushroom such as Portobello. Another absolutely iconic match would be with Escargot covered in a truckload of garlic and parsley butter, vegetarians, we know what you are thinking, just apply the same twist as the last dish and replace the snails with sautéed shrooms. Bosh!
