What?
Juice 2018 Grüner Veltliner, Lois, Loimer, Kamptal, AUT
Grape 100% Grüner Veltliner
Farming Certified Organic, Vegan
Tasting Note This wine has intense spicy aromas of ground white pepper and cardamom with fresh yellow apple. On the palate, the 2018 Lois has a vibrant mouthfeel and graceful acidity with notes of green plum and dried pineapple. The finish is fresh with lingering tartness.
Who?
Fred Loimer owns 80 hectares around Langenlois, in the sunny Kamptal region of Lower Austria. Fred makes a range of wines from the excellent value 'Lois' and 'Lenz' to the superb, single varietal Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners. Unlike many Austrian producers who go for an overly rich and sweet style, Fred gets full ripeness in the vineyard yet ferments to dryness, managing to produce wines with lovely definition, zest and balance on the palate.
Why?
We love the way Fred chooses to showcase the most regal of Austrian varietals. The soils found in his vineyards are mixed and well drained, with Gneiss (coarse-grained, metamorphic rock containing Quartz, Felspar and mica) subsoil. This ensures a mid-palate packed full of stony, mineral components which, along with Fred’s wine making teckers, further help to frame and tighten the normally viscous character of Grüner.
With?
Weinerschnitzel, the geographically protected (WTFF?!) Austrian version made with Veal and not to be confused with its German counterpart of the Pork variety is just about as good a regional pairing as you could ever find anywhere at any time in history. Even if you spent a lifetime travelling like Michael J Fox in Back to the Future on a mission to find the greatest regional food and wine pairing in the Galaxy you still probably wouldn’t find anything better. Ever. Anywhere. In History. Mind you, now that we think of it, Asian dishes and spice are pretty damn good pairing too…
