Tasting Note On the nose, there are rich notes of black cherries, plums and an elegant mineral touch. On the palate it is smooth with velvety tannins and a long finish, bursting with fruit.
Who?
The Castaño family owns over 410 hectares of vineyards in the Yecla DO in south-eastern Spain. 80% of these vineyards are planted with the native Monastrell variety. For several generations, Bodegas Castaño has been a pioneer in this region and has come to symbolise the best of what southern Spain has to offer: rich, warm climate wines made from grapes grown at altitude, resulting in wines of great character and finesse.
Why?
We love the Castano family’s approach to both viticulture and winemaking. Their philosophy eschews both aggressive extraction and the use of oak (both during fermentation and after for the ageing of the wines). This ensures the wines are pure, vibrant and oh so drinkable. They are at the very peak of our Quality vs. Price ratio and we would quite happily challenge anyone to find a certified organic red wine that shows better value for money.
With?
The fruit forward, vibrant, juicy, supple characters require more subtle flavours to pair with. One might quite happily wash down Spanish cured meats such as Iberico di Bellota or Serrano Jamon with some Guindillas and Manchego. For warmer dishes heading winter, meatier fish like Turbot finished with red wine jus or even pork belly with sautéed red cabbage and quince.
