Tasting Note On the nose, there are fragrant aromas of apple, pear and quince. On the palate, it is soft and fruity with a lifted finish.
Who?
The Castaño family owns over 410 hectares of vineyards in the Yecla DO in south-eastern Spain. 80% of these vineyards are planted with the native Monastrell variety. For several generations, Bodegas Castaño has been a pioneer in this region and has come to symbolise the best of what southern Spain has to offer: rich, warm climate wines made from grapes grown at altitude, resulting in wines of great character and finesse.
Why?
We love the Castano family’s approach to both viticulture and winemaking. Their philosophy eschews both aggressive extraction and the use of oak (both during fermentation and after for the ageing of the wines). This ensures the wines are pure, vibrant and oh so drinkable. They are at the very peak of our Quality v Price ratio and we would quite happily challenge anyone to find a certified organic red wine that shows better value for money.
With?
This is a very easy going expression of Macabeo so we don’t want to pair anything to intense. Fresh and light green salads with apples, pears or peaches and finished with herbs. Arroz (rice) is a local speciality and is prepared in a variety of ways though we thing Arroz de Verduras (rice and vegetables) would be a delightful regional combination. You could do a lot worse than just stir frying some tofu and green vegetables with lemongrass and garlic. Bosh!
