Who?
Dr John Kirk planted the Clonakilla vineyard at Murrumbateman, 40 kilometres north of Canberra, in 1971 after his scientific curiosity led him to question why vines were not being grown in this area. His research showed that the soil and climate seemed suited to certain varieties. Clonakilla means 'meadow of the church' and is the name of Dr Kirk's grandfather's farm in County Clare, Ireland. In 1997 Tim Kirk, the fourth of John's six sons, took over responsibility for winemaking. Today, Clonakilla is recognised as one of the leading estates in Australia. Tim was named Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year in 2013.
Why?
The Kirk family a solely responsible for putting Canberra district wines on the Aussie map. We’d go further and say not only have they put the region on the map but elevated their wines to the level of some of the greatest expressions of cooler climate Rhone and Alsatian varietals in the country. Their Riesling is no exception. Part of the original 1971 plantings, the vines are now 50 years old which translates into a wine that has incredible depth and concentration.
With?
We would recommend all the classic dishes to pair with Riesling from crustaceans to ceviche or crudo and of course south-east Asian dishes with various levels of spice. Due to the added weight and depth of flavour one could easily pair foods with more robust flavour profiles such as pork or chicken schnitzel with a side of homemade coleslaw or the classic Alsatian dish of Choucroute which is essentially a melange of boiled sausages and various other delicious salted meats served with a side of sauerkraut, boiled potatoes and a massive spoonful of Dijon mustard.
