Tasting Note An alluring nose of mountain herbs with hints of spring flowers. The palate is fresh and lively with green apple, pear, white peach and grapefruit. The finish is dry and crisp with a lovely saline touch.
Who?
The Panizzi family have been producing wine in the historical hillside town of San Gimignano for are located in the picturesque medieval town of San Gimignano in Tuscan. Whilst their vineyards are planted with multiple varieties, the big focus centres on the King of local indigenous white varietals- Vernaccia.
Why?
Interestingly, in 1961 Vernaccia di San Gimignano became Italy’s first DOC. It has since been elevated to DOCG status and is home to some of Tuscany's leading white wines. We find the balance that Panizzi achieves between freshness and texture absolutely perfect, and we think the aforementioned wine is incredible value for money.
With?
One of the most popular dishes in San Gimignano is the traditional homemade pici pasta. Originating from nearby Siena, it is served with a variety of different sauces, such as red sauce with garlic and olive oil, or a simple sauce of mixed vegetables. Both of these incarnations of this local dish would pair perfectly with the herbaceous, mineral purity of the above wine. Many of the local dishes include the variety of herbs found in the area, and the inclusion of these would highlight those characters in the wine. The area is also famous for a variety of Pecorino cheeses- each and every one would balance the freshness in this expression of Vernaccia and pair an absolute treat.
